Air Fryer Chips

Air Fryer Chips

If there is ONE recipe that you should master with your new air fryer, it’s this one... Air fryer chips.

How to cook frozen chips in the air fryer

Frozen chips will cook up beautifully in your air fryer! Don’t defrost them first. Dial up your temp to 200°C and reduce the time on the pack by about 5-6 minutes. Then watch through the glass so you can catch your chips at the perfect level of doneness.

How to make homemade chips in your air fryer

A bag of potatoes is usually cheaper and less processed than a bag of frozen fries. You won’t need much oil or even prep time. So why not try making your own air fryer chips?

What potatoes should you use for chips?

You do you!  We used potatoes labelled “good for mash”, to give a fluffy interior, but we also tested this recipe with salad potatoes, and they produced crispy chips, too!

Does the air fryer make good chips?

YES!  The Clear Mini glass air fryer cooks by circulating hot air. So just lightly oil your chips and watch them sizzle: the fat heats up and creates glorious golden edges.

Should you pre-cook or soak your chips?

In our test kitchen, we preferred the chips that were parboiled for just 5 minutes – they were softer in the middle. We also salted the water, so that our chips were seasoned before cooking.

After parboiling, we cooked our chips in the air fryer for about 20 minutes to reach a stage of light golden crispiness. Then we ate them… very fast.

Ultimate Air Fryer Chips

Serves 1

2 medium potatoes, peeled
1-2 tsp olive oil
Salt

1 – Bring a pan of salted water to the boil.

2 – Cut the potatoes into chips that are about the width of your finger. Drop them into the water and parboil for 5 minutes.

3 – Turn off the heat and drain the chips, then return them to the warm pan. Place a clean tea towel over the pan and cover with the lid. Leave for 5-10 minutes to steam dry.

4 -  Remove the lid and let the steam escape. Add oil to the chips and toss in the pan to coat them well.

5 – Arrange the chips on the crisper rack in a single layer (some overlap is OK). Cook at 200° for 19-23 minutes, pausing to shake the drawer a couple of times.

6 – Drain on kitchen towel and sprinkle with sea salt!

QUICK CHIPS

Making chips in the ad break?  For a quicker version, you can cut the potatoes more thinly (half a finger’s width), rub them dry, and toss with oil.

EATING SUGGESTIONS

-       🤔     Make Taco Bell style spicy chips by tossing your parboiled chips with Fajita Seasoning before adding the oil.

-         🤔   Once they’re cooked, you can turn them into loaded chips: pile the chips into the silicone baking dish, then sprinkle with toppings (crispy onions, pesto, leftover chilli, mozzarella… you’ll think of more). Add wet toppings in small spoonfuls so the chips don’t get soggy, then cook at 180°C: about 3-4 minutes should melt the cheese.

-       😲     Mix up some Bisto and try a Welsh tradition: chips smothered in gravy. It’s poutine but without the cheese curds.

-        ✨    Serve with the air fryer gammon joint (cook that first and cover it with foil to keep warm) and a fried egg or two.

THE AIR FRYER CHIP SHOW

It’s not a television show yet, but it should be. Who’s having chips tonight?  Share your pictures and video with us @KelenandWillian and make us all hungry.
