Air Fryer Party Bhajis

Air Fryer Party Bhajis

Next time you have a party, or even just a picky tea, try making these simple vegetable bhajis in your air fryer.  They turn out super crunchy thanks to the Clear Mini!

Traditional bhajis vs. air fryer bhajis…

Classic bhajis originated in India, where they are often prepared as tea-time snacks. (good call.) They’re traditionally deep-fried and often have only a few ingredients – sliced onion, gram flour, and spices.

We’ve adapted the recipe for the air fryer by adding egg, so these hold together during the cook. All you’ll do is grate carrot or sweet potato, slice onion, and mix them with gram flour – a high-protein flour made from chickpeas – and egg. Spice the mixture up with any seasoning blend you like (we used Bombay Masala from Seasoned Pioneers) and add a squeeze of lemon to sharpen the flavour.

Serving ideas

The bhajis can be served with salad as a starter (add raita and lemon wedges for authenticity). You can also wrap them in flatbreads with pickles and hummus to make a nutritious lunch. But our favourite serving method is just to spread them on a big plate for grazing. Dipping is part of the joy, so we recommend raiding the fridge for all your sauces – mango chutney, hot honey, sriracha. Drizzle them on like nobody’s watching.

Air Fryer Party Bhajis

Gluten-free | Makes about 12

2 onions, finely sliced
1-2  carrots, grated (see method)
Salt and pepper
2 tsp Bombay Masala (you can use any curry blend here)
1 egg, beaten
50g gram flour
Squeeze of lemon juice

1 – Slice your onions finely and weigh them – you need 200g of vegetables, so add one or two grated carrots to reach 200g.

2 – Season with salt, pepper and curry powder, and mix well to coat.

3 – Add the beaten egg and mix again. Add the gram flour and lemon juice and use a spoon or your hands to mix and squeeze the mixture thoroughly!

4 -  Rub the mixture off your hands 😊. Now oil them and form the mixture into small, bite-sized bhajis.   Irregular shapes are good.

5 – Line your crisper rack with a round of baking paper and place 5-6 bhajis on top.  Spray lightly with an oil mister.

6 – Bake at 180°C for 15-16 minutes, turning them over at the halfway point.
